What is the "ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge"?
It is a campaign challenging Michigan's residents to spend 75% of their holiday shopping dollars in Michigan’s downtowns and Michigan Main StreetSM districts. Why was the “ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge” created?
The past few years have been tough on local retailers. The state’s, and nation’s, economic health has not been what was in years past. The partners wanted to organize a statewide campaign to help raise awareness that Michigan residents' purchases, particularly during the holiday season, can have a dramatic effect on the economic health of their local economy. In short, supporting locally owned small businesses creates jobs.
The “ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge” was inspired by a campaign in Sparta, Michigan. Sparta’s “Christmas in Sparta” campaign features a video blog highlighting the various purchases being made downtown.
